Road trips and Racing

17-Aug-10
Last weekend, we took our Type 5 on a 1500km road trip with some racing thrown in. Brave or stupid? We'll let you decide...

Before first light, On the 12th of August, the crackle of a 20 Valve Toyota broke the stillness... It was the beginning of a 1500km Road trip to Port Elizabeth for our first visit to the Aldo Scribante Raceway. After meeting up with our good friends James Reinhardt and Anthony Cocks, we set of in earnest. With the ambient temperature at times as low as 2 degress above freezing, fingers and toes were rather tender, but the stunning scenery and incredible sunrise made it worthwhile, as well as the fact that we were setting off in cars we had built ourselves.

The route took us inland, through the Breede River valley. Eventually, we rejoined the N2 and headed East. Breakfast at Rooiberg and Lunch at Knysna were the only major stops, and we arrived in the paddock in port Elizabeth at sundown on Thursday evening.

After making a campsite behind our designated pit, it was time to settle in and discuss what had been a fun day on the most beautiful route in the world, our Garden Route.

Check out our gallery for some pictures of the journey.
